Because of security updates in version 6.1.1 there are a few considerations that need to be taken into account. It is always best to get the assistance of your IT department for any installation. If you are unable to get assistance from your IT department for this upgrade feel free to contact VON Support at (802) 865-4814 ex. 240.
Prior to trying to upgrade to version 6.1.1 there are a couple things you need to confirm. First, please check the database version. To check the database version log into eNICQ 6, click on the gear icon in the top right of the Patient Log, and select About eNICQ from the menu:
On the window that pops up there is a Version Information section which will give the version numbers of both the client application and the database:
Next, check the version of Microsoft .NET Framework installed on the workstations. To confirm what version is installed go to the Programs and Features section of the Windows Control Panel (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features), scroll down to where it lists the versions of Microsoft .NET Framework and just confirm it's 4.6.1 or higher:
If you do need to install .NET Framework 4.6.1 you can download it for free from Microsoft. You will need to have local administrator permissions on the workstation to install it.
If your database is version 6.1.0 then you only need to run the MSI to upgrade the client application on your workstation or computer. You only need local admin permissions on the workstation to run it.
There is no installation wizard that pops up when you run the MSI. Since the MSI runs in the background it will probably appear as if nothing happened. To confirm that the update was successful log into eNICQ 6, click on the gear icon in the top right, and select About eNICQ to confirm the Client version is 6.1.1
NOTE: Some versions of eNICQ 6.1.0 have an issue reusing Medical Record Numbers after a patient with that same MRN has been deleted. If you are experiencing this you will need to upgrade the database to version 6.1.1.
If your current database version is 6.0.14 or 6.0.15 you will need to run the full installer and update both the client application and the database as those versions of the database are not compatible with the 6.1.1 client application. To run the installer against an existing eNICQ 6 database you will need the db_owner role on the database or be the administrator on that SQL Server.
If you do not have these permissions you will receive a message telling you your center already has a database registered with VON (it will look to the installer that you're trying to install a second active database). If your database was installed locally on your computer using SQL Server 2012 Express then the person who was logged into the computer during the installation will by default be the administrator of that server and should then be able to run the installer to upgrade the database but if the database is installed on a Standard or Enterprise version of SQL Server on your network then you will need to contact the database team in your IT department to make sure you have the appropriate permissions or to have someone run the installer for you.
The eNICQ 6 installer does require you have your eNICQ 6 License Key to run. When you run the installer on a workstation or server where there's a Connection.enicq (aka 'connection file') located in C:\ProgramData\VON (note: ProgramData is by default a hidden Windows folder - please see Chapter 3 of the eNICQ 6 Installation Guide on how you could make it visible) the installer will find that and read it so the server and database information should just auto-populate when you get to that screen on the installer.
Please be careful to not change any of the settings used during the initial installation of eNICQ 6. Please make sure to select the correct login type; Active Directory or VON Logins. If you have to log in with your email address and password each time you run eNICQ 6 you are using VON Logins but if it just opens without any login screen you are using Active Directory.
If you run the installer from a workstation where eNICQ 6 was already installed or if you are running it from the server where the Connection.enicq file is saved in C:\ProgramData\VON it will automatically locate the connection file and point itself to the location of the database. If you don't have the connection file the installer will think you are trying to install and register a brand new database and give you an error. After confirmed you have the correct permissions (see above) the steps to the installation are:
- Download the installer from https://public.vtoxford.org/enicq-6/ (we will always have the most recent release available there) and run it.
- If you are running it from a computer where there is a Connection.enicq file saved to the appropriate location the first screen of the installer will automatically default to "Yes" when it asks "Do you have an existing connection file you would like to use" and show the path. If you have a connection file but it's saved somewhere other than the VON folder under ProgramData you can browse to it and select it. After making sure the connection file is selected click Next.
- On the next screen enter your license key and click Next
- If it asks you on the next screen what login method you wish to use please make sure you select the one already bring used (Active Directory or VON logins) otherwise you will switch to the other method and break the SQL permissions to the database for the users. Click Next.
- If you select AD logins the next screen should auto-populate with the AD group names you have been using. You just need to click Next.
If you had selected VON logins you will not get this screen.
- If all the permissions are in place and no other error occurs this should update your database to version 6.1.1 and it will then ask you where you want to install the Client. If you are just upgrading the database you can select to Install on a different machine or use Group Policy and click Next to end the installation. You would then want to use the MSI (see above) to update the client applications on each workstation but if you are running the installer from a workstation and want to update the client as well select "Install on this machine" and click Next.
- You should get a dialogue window asking you to "Please wait while Windows configures eNICQ 6". When the dialogue window disappears the upgrade of the client application will be done and you will get a screen saying "Congratulations! You successfully installed eNICQ 6." You could then select "Exit the installer", "Run eNICQ 6", or "View the Help Files" and click Finish to exit the installer.
These are almost the exact same steps given in Chapter 3 of the eNICQ 6 Installation Guide starting on p. 33 so feel free to use that as a reference, too.
